Display Energy Certificates

Commercial Services

Estate Surveys provide Display Energy Certificates (DECs) and Advisory Reports (AR) for Qualifying Buildings, to meet the requirements of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and UK Legislation. A DEC is required for public buildings and those occupied by public authorities which have a total useful floor area greater than 1000m² (a Qualifying Building). Examples of a public buildings include schools, hospitals, government or local authority buildings.

A DEC will show the actual energy usage of a building, therefore the occupier, in collaboration with the energy assessor, will need to provide actual meter readings or consignment notes for all fuels used in the buildings that are affected by the EPBD legislation. This may include gas fuels, oil fuels, solid fuels, district heating and cooling, grid electricity and electricity generated on site or obtained by private distribution systems from other sites. An mandatory AR will last for 7 years but a DEC will need to be displayed and renewed annually.

Companies wishing to demonstrate their green credentials are beginning to use DECs on a voluntary basis.   Some supermarkets and major organisations have started trials as they make commitments to reduce their carbon footprint.  A DEC is currently one of the best, and most economic ways a company can raise awareness of energy issues and demonstrate to its customers and staff the effects of their energy saving efforts.
